In 2019, Tal Lemmens was awarded the Gold Medal (1st place) of the VIEpa Vienna International Photo Award 2020 ‘Our World’ category with his winning photograph ‘Apex’. Tal’s international competition win projected his iconic seascape and ocean photography to a new worldwide audience.

The VIEPA Vienna International Photo Awards featured Tal’s winning art in an exhibition at the LIK GALERIE Summer Photo Festival in Vienna, Austria. His images was printed in the 2020 competition photography book.

He was featured in local media outlets Geelong Advertiser, Herald Sun, Surf Coast Times and Bellarine Times, providing some momentum to the local artist from the Surf Coast of Victoria, Australia.

The award came as a positive surprise for Tal, after dislocating his ankle and breaking his leg in three places following a mountain bike accident in Geelong, Victoria. Tal spent four weeks in hospital, requiring three surgeries and a lengthy stint out of the water. Tal was limited in his ability to take photos. He was highly motivated to work on his physiotherapy with a keenness to return back to the sea and begin creating ocean art again. Tal’s now back creating and doing what he loves most - spending time in the ocean.
